Surreptitious return

While this blog might have looked like it's been dead for some time, it has often been on my mind, and I've been waiting for the right time and motivation to resurrect it.

It turns out that the longer you leave something, the more daunting a task it seems to be. The decisions to make! What can I post about? Do I make some explanation for my long absence, or do I jut get back into it and hope no one notices I stopped for a year and a half? The worries! Will I have any (of my admittedly very few) readers left? Will I just make one post and disappear again forever?

I don't have answers to any of those questions, so I will just get on with it. Since everyone likes pictures, here is a pictorial summary of my last few years in food:

Mushrooms and Mash

Mushrooms and Mash

How to serve mash that's less boring than just mash.

On the left we have: Mashed potato and broccoli, with bok choi.

On the right we have: Mashed potato, kumara, and chickpeas.

Both mashes include liberal salt, pepper, olive oil, and rice milk.

Topped off with sauteed mushroom.

Delicious.

Only - don't try and use mash as a way to sneak chickpeas in for someone who doesn't like chickpeas - even though you can't taste them, the person who doesn't like chickpeas will!

(I wasn't really trying to sneak chickpeas in, just boost the protein!)

Deconstructed Tacos

Deconstructed Tacos
Originally uploaded by bezajel

A few days ago, my quick, throw-together meal was tacos (deconstructed). When you break the tacos in half and serve them with all the 'fillings' on one big plate, you get around the issue of filling falling out the edges as you bite down.

I have to admit, that the end result is not much tidier than normal tacos, but scooping up beans and vegetables with half a taco shell is just as fun.

Here, my taco has chilli beans (from a can!), grated cheese and carrot, tomato, and lettuce that's too frilly for tacos really. After I took the picture I piled a whole of of extra tomato (chopped into chunks rather than sliced) on top, and threw extra lettuce and carrot into a bowl.

Yum!

Red Potatoes

Red Potatoes

I just wanted to quickly share this photo of the red potatoes I bought at the markets on Sunday. They are small and dark, and I was eyeing them up when another marketgoer exclaimed how good they were roasted with olive oil.

I gave them a try, and as well as being very beautiful and adding a new colour to the roast vegetables I made last night, they taste seriously yummy!

And they make me giggle, because they look like poos, and I am ten years old.
